Fred: Hello! Merry Christmas, Uncle! (Ciao! Buon Natale, Zio!)
Scrooge: Nonsense! Rubbish! … Christmas is nonsense. Bah! (Sciocchezze! Il Natale non ha senso. Bah!)
Fred: You don’t mean that, Uncle! (Non puoi dire sul serio, Zio!)
Scrooge: Oh yes I do … Why are you happy? … You don’t have much money. (Oh sì che lo sono … Perché sei felice? … Non hai molti soldi.)
Fred: Why are you not happy, Uncle? You’ve got lots of money. (Perché non sei felice, Zio? Tu hai molti soldi.)
Scrooge: Bah! … Nonsense! … (Bah! … Sciocchezze! …)
Fred: Don’t be angry, Uncle. It’s Christmas. (Non arrabbiarti, Zio. E’ Natale)
Scrooge: People who say “Merry Christmas” are stupid idiots. They said “Merry Christmas” last year. Now … they are a year older … and they have spent a lot of money … and they say “Merry Christmas” again… They are idiots. (Le persone che dicono “Buon Natale” sono stupide. Esse hanno detto “Buon Natale” l’anno scorso. Ora … hanno un anno in più … ed hanno speso molti soldi … ed esse dicono “Buon Natale” di nuovo” … Sono idiote.)
Fred: Christmas is a very important time of the year. People are kind and helpful at Christmas … They help poor people … I feel happy at Christmas … I like Christmas. (Natale è un periodo dell’anno molto importante. Le persone sono generose e altruiste a Natale … Aiutano i poveri … Io mi sento felice a Natale … Mi piace il Natale …).
Bob: Oh, yes! Yes! I agree! (O, sì! Sì! Sono d’accordo!)
Scrooge: If you say one more word, Bob Cratchit, you will lose your job… Goodbye nephew! … (Se dici un’altra parola, Bob Cratchit, perderai il posto … Arrivederci nipote!)
Fred: Oh, Uncle! Come to dinner with me and my family tomorrow. (O, Zio! Vieni a pranzo con me e la mia famiglia domani.)
Scrooge: Goodbye. (Arrivederci.)
Fred: I want you to have a happy Christmas with me and my family. (Voglio che tu trascorra un felice Natale con me e la mia famiglia.)
Scrooge: Goodbye. (Arrivederci.)
Fred: Merry Christmas, Uncle, and Merry Christmas to you too, Bob. (Buon Natale, Zio, e Buon Natale anche a te, Bob.)
Bob: Merry Christmas, sir. (Buon Natale, signore.)
1st Gentleman: Good afternoon, sir. Are you Mr Scrooge or Mr Marley? (Buon pomeriggio, signore. Siete il signor Srooge o il Signor Marley?)
Scrooge: Marley is dead. He died seven years ago today … on Christmas Eve. (Marley è morto. E’ morto sette anni fa oggi … la vigilia di Natale.)
1st Gentleman: Mr Scrooge, I need your help because it’s Christmas. I want money (FA SEGNO CON LE DITA) to help the poor people who have no money and no homes. (Signor Scrooge, ho bisogno del vostro aiuto perché è Natale. Voglio del denaro per aiutare i poveri che non hanno soldi e case.)
Scrooge: You can put these poor people in prisons and workhouses, can’t you? (Potete mandare questi poveri nelle prigioni e nelle case di lavoro, vero?)
2nd Gentleman: But prisons and workhouses are unpleasant places. You want people to have a merry Christmas, don’t you? How much money will you give us? (Ma le prigioni e le case di lavoro sono luoghi spiacevoli. Voi volete che la gente abbia un felice Natale, vero? Quanti soldi ci darete?)
Scrooge: None! None at all! .... I don’t have a merry Christmas … I don’t believe in Christmas … Put the poor people in the workhouses. (Niente soldi! Nient’affatto! … Io non trascorro un felice Natale … Non credo al Natale … Mandate I poveri nelle case di lavoro!)
2nd Gentleman: Many people fear and hate workhouses. They would rather die than live in workhouses. (Molte persone temono e odiano le case di lavoro. Morirebbero piuttosto che vivere nelle case di lavoro.)
Scrooge: Good … tell them to go away and die! Goodbye. (Bene dite loro di andare via e morire! Arrivederci.) (ESCONO GENTILUOMINI).
Scrooge: (ALLO SCRIVANO) You want to have a holiday tomorrow, I suppose? (Vuoi la giornata libera domain, suppongo?)
Bob: Yes, please, if it’s all right. (Sì, per piacere, se va bene.)
Scrooge: No, it isn’t all right. You will be paid a day’s wages and do no work. (No, non va bene. Tu avrai il salario di una giornata e non lavorerai.)
Bob: Christmas Day is only once a year. (Natale è solo una volta all’anno.)
Scrooge: Bah! I suppose I can’t make you work on Christmas Day. Nobody else woks. … But you must be here very early the next day! (Bah! Suppongo che non posso farti lavorare il giorno di Natale. Nessun altro lavora. … Ma devi essere qua molto presto il giorno successivo!) (BOB ESCE)
SCENE 2 – MARLEY’S GHOST (IL FANTASMA DI MARLEY)
CASA DI SCROOGE (camera da letto)
Scrooge: Who are you? (Chi sei?)
Ghost: Ask me who I was. (Chiedimi chi ero.) (FA RUMORE CON LE CATENE)
Scrooge: Bah!… Who were you? (Bah! … Chi eri?)
Ghost: When I was alive, we worked together. I was your partner, Jacob Marley. (Quando ero vivo, lavoravamo insieme. Ero il tuo socio, Jacob Marley.)
Scrooge: How nice to see you again, my old friend. But why are you chained? (Come è bello rivederti, vecchio amico. Ma perché sei incatenato?)
Ghost: These are the chains (FA RUMORE CON LE CATENE) of my riches that torment me now that I’m dead! … Oh, if only I had used my life to do good instead of only thinking of money. I want to help you, Ebeneezer. … You must change your ways. You’ll be visited by three spirits. … Listen to them or you’ll share my fate. ( Queste sono le catene delle mie ricchezze che mi tormentano ora che sono morto! … O, se solo avessi speso la mia vita a fare del bene invece di pensare solo al denaro. Voglio aiutarti Ebeneezer … Devi cambiare le tue maniere. Riceverai la visita di tre spiriti … Ascoltali altrimenti ti toccherà la mia stessa sorte.)

Scrooge (AL FANTASMA VICINO AL SUO LETTO): Who are you?
Ghost: I am the spirit of past Christmases. … I want to show you something. … Come with me! (Io sono lo spirito dei Natali passati … Voglio mostrarti qualcosa … vieni con me!)
(LO CONDUCE NELL’AULA DI UNA VECCHIA SCUOLA DOVE C’E’ UN RAGAZZO DA SOLO CHINO SUL BANCO)
Do you recognize that boy, scorned by everyone because of his bad temper? (Riconosci quel ragazzo, disprezzato da tutti a causa del suo brutto carattere?)
Scrooge: Oh yes, that’s me when I was young! (Sì, quello sono io quando ero giovane!)(PIANGE)Poor boy! Last night I sent away a boy … He sang a Christmas carol … Now, I wish I could give him some money …(Povero ragazzo! Ieri sera ho mandato via un ragazzo … vantava una canzone di Natale .. Ora, vorrei potergli dare dei soldi …)
(IL RAGAZZO SEDUTO SI ALZA E ESCE).
Ghost (SORRIDE): I am going to show you another Christmas in this school.(Ora ti mostrerò un altro Natale in questa scuola.) (AL POSTO DEL RAGAZZO NE SUBENTRA UN ALTRO PIU’ GRANDE – SOPRAGGIUNGE UNA BELLA RAGAZZA CHE CORRE VERSO IL RAGAZZO, LO ABBRACCIA E LO BACIA).
Fanny: Let’s go home, Ebeneezer! (Andiamo a casa, Ebeneezer!)
Young Scrooge 1: Home, Frances? Can I come home? (A casa, Frances? Posso venire a casa?)
Fanny: Yes, you’re coming home for Christmas. The carriage is waiting outside! (Sì, vieni a casa per Natale. La carrozza sta aspettando fuori!)
Ghost: Your sister, Frances, was a kind girl. And she was kind when she was a woman too. She died a long time ago. But she had a son … your nephew Fred. (Tua sorella, Frances, era una ragazza generosa. Ed era generosa anche da adulta. Morì tanto tempo fa. Ma aveva un figlio … tuo nipote Fred.)
(LO CONDUCE AD UNA PANCHINA DOVE SONO SEDUTI DUE GIOVANI FIDANZATI)
Young Scrooge 2: And that’s me too, with Belle! (E anche quello sono io, con Belle!)
Belle: No, Ebeneezer, we can’t go on like this. I love you, but you love only your money. (No, Ebeneezer, non possiamo continuare così. Ti amo, ma tu ami solo il tuo denaro.)
Young Scrooge 2: I still love you, Belle. (Ti amo ancora, belle.)
Belle: I’m sorry, Ebeneezer! When we were young, we were poor but happy. Now our love is dead and the man I loved is no longer there. (Mi dispiace, Ebeneezer! Quando eravamo giovani, eravamo poveri ma felici. Ora il nostro amore è morto e l’uomo che amavo non c’è più.)
Young Scrooge 2: Don’t leave me, Belle, please, don’t abandon me! (Non lasciarmi, Belle, per piacere non abbandonarmi!)
Belle: I’m sorry. Try to be happy in the life you’ve chosen. (Mi dispiace. Prova ad essere felice nella vita che hai scelto.)
SCENE 4 – THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PRESENT
(IL FANTASMA DEL NATALE PRESENTE)
(CASA DI BOB – CASA DI FRED: 2 STANZE DA PRANZO)
Ghost: I am the Ghost of Christmas Present … Look at me … Have you ever seen anyone like me before? (Sono lo spirito del Natale Presente … Guardami … Hai mai visto uno come me prima?)
Scrooge: No. Never. … Take me with you … Last night I saw many things that happened in my past life. I learnt many things. Tonight I want to go out and learn more. I want to learn to live a better life. (No. Mai. … Portami con te … La scorsa notte ho visto molte cose che sono accadute nella mia vita passata. Ho imparato molte cose. Stasera voglio uscire e imparare di più. Voglio imparare a vivere una vita migliore.)
Bob: A Merry Christmas to us all, my dears! God bless us! (Un Buon Natale a tutti noi, miei cari! Che Dio ci benedica!) (ALZANO I CALICI).
Ghost: This family is very poor. They cannot buy enough food. … They cannot pay a doctor. … The little boy will die if the family does not get medicine and more food … (Questa famiglia è molto povera. Non può comperare cibo a sufficienza. …Non può pagare un dottore. … Il bambino morirà se la famiglia non gli procura la medicina e il cibo necessari …)
Scrooge: Oh, no … (GUARDA LO SPIRITO CON ORRORE) (O, no … )
Ghost: Yes … the little boy will die … (Sì … il ragazzo morirà … )
Bob: And God bless Mr Scrooge! (E Dio benedica il Signor Scrooge!) (ALZA IL CALICE)... He’s not so bad really … and … it’s Christmas Day … we must all drink and give our wishes to Mr Scrooge. (Non è in realtà così cattivo … e … è Natale … dobbiamo bere tutti e fare I nostri auguri al signor Scrooge.)
Family: God bless Mr Scrooge! (Che Dio benedica il signor Scrooge!) (ALZANO I CALICI … SONO FELICI)
Fred: Uncle Scrooge said Christmas is nonsense. He said. “It’s humbug! Bah!” (Lo Zio Scrooge ha detto che il Natale è una sciocchezza. Ha detto “E’ una sciocchezza! Bah!”) (FA UN GESTO DI DISPREZZO CON LA MANO).
Fred’s wife: Your uncle is a miserable old man … He doesn’t care about anybody … He only cares about his money … (Tuo zio è un infelice vecchietto … Non gli importa di nessuno … Pensa solo al denaro …)
Fred: He’s a strange old man … his money doesn’t make him happy … I feel sorry for him … I asked him to come and have Christmas dinner with us today … He wouldn’t come … But I’m not angry with him … He is unhappy … Now we must all drink and wish “Merry Christmas” to my uncle (E’ uno strano vecchietto … il suo denaro non lo rende felice … Mi dispiace per lui … Gli ho chiesto di venire a pranzo da noi oggi … Non ha voluto venire … Ma non sono arrabbiato con lui … Egli è infelice … ora dobbiamo tutti bere e augurare “Buon Natale” a mio zio.)

(ENTRA IL 3° FANTASMA CON LA TESTA E IL VISO COPERTI– CAMMINA LENTAMENTE E NON PARLA – INDICA PUNTANDO COL DITO SCROOGE - QUESTI E’ MOLTO SPAVENTATO – CADE IN GINOCCHIO DAVANTI A LUI)
Scrooge: Are you the ghost of Christmas Yet to Come? (Sei il fantasma del Natale che deve ancora venire?) (IL FANTASMA NON RISPONDE MA PUNTA COL DITO OLTRE SCROOGE)
Ghost of the future, I am afraid of you … I want to be a better man … I will come with you … But, please, talk to me … (Spirito del futuro, io ho paura di te … Voglio essere un uomo migliore … verrò con te … ma per piacere parlami …)
(IL FANTASMA CONTINUA A PUNTARE OLTRE SCROOGE INDICANDO UN GRUPPO DI UOMINI NELLA PIAZZA – SCROOGE AFFERRA IL MANTELLO DEL FANTASMA).
(IL FANTASMA CONDUCE SCROOGE PRESSO UN GRUPPETTO DI PERSONE CHE STANNO PARLANDO IN PIAZZA)
First Man: When did he die? (Quando è morto?)
Second Man: Last night. (Ieri sera.)
First Man: Who will go to his funeral? He didn’t have any friends. (Chi andrà al suo funerale? Non aveva amici.)
Scrooge: Who are they talking about? (Di chi stanno parlando?)(IL FANTASMA NON RISPONDE)
(SCROOGE VIENE INDIRIZZATO AD UNA SQUALLIDA BOTTEGUCCIA DI UN USURAIO)
Old Joe: Open your bundles. (Aprite i vostri fagotti.) (LE DUE DONNE APRONO I LORO FAGOTTI)
First Woman: It isn’t wrong to take a few things from a dead man. (Non è sbagliato prendere poche cose da un uomo morto.)
Second Woman: That’s true. He’s dead now. He doesn’t need them. (E’ vero. E’ morto. Non gli servono più.)
Old Joe: Bed sheets and clothes. You didn’t take them from the man on his death bed, did you? (Lenzuola e abiti. Non li avete mica presi dal suo letto di Morte?)
First Woman: No relatives came to the house when he died. So we took the things we wanted. ( Nessun parente è andato a casa quando è morto. Allora abbiamo preso quello che volevamo.) (SCROOGE E’ VISIBILMENTE INORRIDITO)
Scrooge: Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, please take me away from here … (Spirito del Natale che deve ancora venire, per piacere portami via da quì …)
Scrooge:(LEGGENDO IL PROPRIO NOME SULLA TOMBA) No, Ghost! Oh, no, no! … I will live a better life … I will care about people … I will care about Christmas … Please tell me these things will not happen.(No, Spirito! O, no, no! … Vivrò una vita migliore … Mi interesserò alla gente … Terrò al Natale … Per favore dimmi che queste cose non accadranno. )
(AFFERRA UN LEMBO DEL MANTELLO DEL FANTASMA, MA QUESTI ESCE)
SCENE 6 – A CHANGED MAN (UN UOMO CAMBIATO)

Scrooge: God bless you, Jacob Marley. Thank you for coming to help me. Thank you for sending the three ghosts. (Che Dio ti benedica, Jacob Marley. Grazie per essere venuto in mio aiuto. Grazie per avermi mandato i tre spiriti.)

I’m happy! Happy! Happy! Merry Christmas to everybody! Happy Christmas to everybody in the world!(Sono felice! Felice! Felice! Buon Natale a tutti! Buon Natale a tutta la gente del mondo!).
